“Art Deli” is back in a new venue

Formerly on Dunville Avenue, the Art Deli Christmas Pop Up will be on Ranelagh Main Street this December in Ranelagh Arts.

Traditionally a delicatessen is a shop that sells a selection of fine, exotic or specially prepared foods. With “Art Deli” we give you food for the soul!

“Art Deli” will be poping up for Christmas in Ranelagh Arts with a group of artists presenting a selection of their curated art works that will make perfect Christmas gifts for the art lovers in your life………or you can even gift yourself the present of art this holiday season!

Some of the videos featured were created when art gallerists visited PIGSY’s art studio while another one is the PIGSY short film by filmmaker Mike Andrews which was an official selection in film festivals across the UK and Ireland.

Filmmaker Mike Andrews featured PIGSY and his story of his life with dyslexia in his short film. The film went on to be officially selected for film festivals in Ireland and Great Britain, including the prestigous Galway Film Festival / Fleadh. “PIGSY” short film has been shared by Dyslexia associations all over the world and is an inspiring and uplifting movie for all who live with dyslexia or have experience with those who do.

Studios of Ranelagh Arts - a new space for PIGSY to create

After my year’s art residency in Spain and then my return to Ireland, I am now really pleased to have been offered a studio space in Ranelagh Arts. While in Malaga, Spain I was artist in resident in La Casa Amarilla Centro de Arte y Cultura Contemporáne. It was an amazing experience which culminated in my solo exhibition “I Went to Mass”.

La Casa Amarilla had a gallery on the ground floor and then studios above where a selection of multidiscipinary artists worked in various spaces.

Artist Collaboration

Sharing spaces with other artists is a wonderfully collaborative thing to do and the creativie engagement adds to most artist’s work. In particular, I enjoyed the collaboration with the other artists in the studios of La Casa Amarilla because they were all so diverse and from different backgrounds and countries - again it all adds to creative endevours.

After my return to Ireland, I worked from studios in White Swan in Dublin 8. You can read about the White Swan space in a past blog about this amazing space and all that I got up to.

And now my newest art residency is in my hometown of Ranelagh. It is a shared space within the Ranelagh Arts Centre and again I am looking forward to engaging and collaborating with other artists and creatives. Nestled on the main street of Ranelagh, among shops, barbers and restaurants (only steps away from the Ranelagh institution that is Nick’s coffee!) there is a buzz around the area which I find immensely inspiring. Additionally it is only a few shops away from FrameXperts which is great for my framing needs - so my coffee addiction and framing is all covered literally at my front door!!

Supporting Fraser Holden and the Black and White Movement /  by PIGSY

Fraser Holden fundraises for the Motor Neuron Disease Association of Ireland

Back in 2017, I had a solo exhibition “Nostalgia’s Not What it Was” in Fumbally Exchange on Dame Lane in Dublin City. It was a sell out success and visited by so many people during the time it was open. One of the people who visited was Australian Fraser Holden who loved my work and was immensely positive about it. From talking to Fraser I could tell how creative he was himself and I knew he would do lots of interesting things while living in Ireland. From following him on Instagram I could see all that he got up to - even writing and illustrating a children’s book.

And now Fraser is working on his latest project which he has started since his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease. He has created the “Black and White Movement” to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and with his wife Orlagh Reynolds is hosting a large scale art exhibition on October 20th in the Richmond Event & Exhibition Centre in Dublin.

I am proud to support Fraser in this endeavour and have donated two pieces for this exhibition in which all of the paintings are black and white. To find out more about the exhibtion, see the Black and White Art Movement Instagram.

Fraser Holden on Ireland AM

In an interview on Ireland AM, Fraser’s wife Orlagh explains how ugly the disease of MND is but she goes on to say that there is goodness too and this goodness is where Fraser is now fundraising for the Motor Neurone Association of Ireland and how he reached out to artists and over 40 have submitted pieces for his Black and White Movement Art Exhibition. As I said Fraser is a creative guy and he is also an artist too and so he has created a piece of art specifically for part of this fundraiser of which you can also buy tickets here for along with lots of other great prizes. Click here to see details of the raffle. The art work by Fraser is called “Commodity” and it is all about what is about our most important commodity which is time.

There are other ways to support and a GoFundMe has also been set up of which you can find details of by clicking here.

MND is an incurable terminal disease so any support you can give is invaluable and will help to fund research while the Go Fund Me could help Fraser and his family as they live with the disease. As I said I am very happy to be able to support Fraser in this project and I hope you can too.

Ice Bucket Challenge for MND

And if you are thinking you have never heard of Motor Neurone Disease you may recall the viral “Ice Bucket Challenge” from a few years ago. This challenge was all about bringing awareness to MND or what you may refer to as ALS as the disease is also known as amyotrphic lateral sclerosis, depending on what country you are living in. "Dyslexia Quando Arte", Digital Exhibition /  by PIGSY

Dyslexia Quando Arte

PIGSY artwork will be presented in Brazil by Domlexia as part of the “Dyslexia Quande Arte” digital exhibition which brings together the work of dyslexic artists from all over the world.

See below for an article in the Brazilian Media which outlines all about the art exhibtion, the artists and the artistic disciplines. It is a very unique exhibition as it brings together artists from all over the world who are dyslexic.

As part of the activities relating to World Dyslexia Day Day (October 10), the 3rd Digital Exhibition Dyslexia Quando Arte opens on the 8th of Oct, at 18:00 in O Sítio in Lagoa da Conceição, in Florianópolis on.the Domlexia platform,

This year, in addition to the works and information about the authors posted on Instagram, there will be face-to-face activities, such as a guided tour of the virtual gallery – a novelty that will provide an immersive experience – and chat with exhibitors and organizers.

A total of 23 artists from Brazil and, for the first time, from abroad (Canada, United States, England, Ireland and Venezuela) will present works of architecture, urban art, visual arts, cinema, dance, design, photography, gastronomy, illustration, literature, fashion, music, poetry and theatre.

Dyslexia Awareness Month: October /  by PIGSY

Celebrating Dyslexia all over the world

Attention is brought to dyslexia during the month of October with awareness weeks and days taking place at different times in Europe and other parts of the world.

Here in Ireland, we mark this week through European Dyslexia Week and World Dyslexia Month but I have listed below the other awareness dates that bring awareness and draw attention to dyslexia.

I’m involved in a few different projects which all bring celebrate dyslexia or bring awareness to Dyslexia Day.

PIGSY and Dyslexia Awareness in Libraries

It’s a great honour for me to have the PIGSY documentary shared by many libraries in Ireland and elsewhere on their social media platforms in order to bring dyslexia awareness and support to the masses. The film is 8 mins long and it is a must watch by anyone who has dyslexia or is connected to someone with dyslexia. It was also interesting to see it being shared in New Zealand by SPELD New Zealand who are New Zealand’s leading not-for-profit provider of assessment, tuition & support for those living with dyslexia.

Neurodiversity Ireland: Infinity Ball 2022

Additionally, this year I am proud to announce that in connection with Neurodiversity Ireland a PIGSY art work has been offered as an auction item at the Infinity Ball 2022 in The Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin. This showcase event will raise funds for the creation of a Sensory Therapy Centre for neurodivergent children in Ireland along with bringing awareness to the 20% of the population who are “neurodivergent” and have Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism or ADHD.

A bespoke frame (designed by me) was custom fabricated by Framexperts in Ranelagh. It’s a simple thin white slip frame and it adds a sharp juxtaposition to the loose fluidity of the artwork which is typical of my style.

Although all working in different discipines what is common to all of these artists is that they are all dyslexic. All across the land of Ireland, cultural institutions throw open their doors for a celebration late in to the night of Friday 23rd of Sept for the 17th “Culture Night”

This year I am pleased to be part of the “Cultural Natures” group exhibition presented by Ranelagh Arts Festival with the Ranelagh Arts Centre bringing art and culture to the streets of Ranelagh until 10pm tonight

The Ranelagh Arts Festival is ongoing with a variety of events and performances from musicians and singers including Mundy and Paddy Casey. Click here to see the full Ranelagh Arts Festival Programme which is presented mainly in Mountpleasant Square - I do also see a pop up Gaeltacht in Humphreys Pub on the main street!

There is also lots more including yoga classes, magic shows, ukulele symphony, choir music and even a DJ. Definitely a diverse and mixed programme with something for everyone in the family.

My selected artwork is “Needed Awake Now” which is created from “meáin mheasctha” (mixed media).

Fionn MacCumhail / Finn MaCool

“Needed Awake Now” is a painting about Fionn MacCool

In Irish legend and according to the most popular account of Fionn MacCumhail’s death, he is not dead at all, rather, he sleeps in a cave, surrounded by the Fianna. One day he will awake and defend Ireland in the hour of her greatest need.
Within this painting is a message of calling those to arms in times of great need. Coming out of the pandemic I find this very relevant and reassured as we saw all of humankind band together in the time of need during the health crisis.

A perfect gift from Ireland

The diary is a really nice hardback edition and makes a perfect gift for all who are interested in the Irish language.

It was an honour for me to be invited to be part of the selection jury for this exhibition led by Curator Monika Crowley of Ranelagh Arts. With over 40 artists selected to exhibit, I was also proud to be invited to be part of the exhibtion.

As Ranelagh is my hometown, I am so pleased to be part of the 2022 Ranelagh Arts Festival and I look forward to attending the art exhibition and all of the other great events taking place in Ranelagh village.

“Cultural Natures” Group Exhibition

In “Cultural Natures”, the topic chosen for this edition by Ranelagh Arts, more than 40 artists from different disciplines have been selected for their exploration of such diverse subjects that are at the same time related to human existence: climate, culture, connections and community. In this exhibition there are visual representations that range from imagining what would happen in the future if the sea rises even higher, questioning current connections such as domestic abuse, communities that are emerging in Dublin from migration, among other subjects that concern the cultural dimension and human nature.

Alll good things must come to an end and Curator Dino Notaro’s Slow Lane Gallery Presentation “LARBI” is now closed after opening on 11th of Aug and running until yesterday.

The closing night finissage was held on Thursday 25th and was visited by lots of art lovers - some were repeat visitors having seen the show at some point over the previous two weeks along with new visitors to the show.

The closing night was a casual affair and had a chilled vibe to it, and again same as the opening, there were many of the artists from the group show in attendance.

A big shout out and thanks goes to Curator Dino Notaro for hosting a great finissage wrap party for this group art show and I look forward to seeing his next art presentation.

All in all, it was great to be involved in this special showing of unique art in the awesome setting of Gallery X.

Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition - Artist Takeover

As part of the Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition, selected artists were chosen to “takeover” the art gallery. On Friday 19th of Aug, it was PIGSY’s opportunity to takeover the gallery.

As the Ranelagh Arts Centre Gallery is locatated on a busy spot on the main street of Ranelagh, the whole day there was a lot of people calling in to see the art on view. And then at 4pm, PIGSY cracked open the wine and started serving drinks and canapes to all who were visiting to see his work and the art work of the other artists in this curator selected group art exhibition.

Dog Friendly Art Gallery

The diverse crowd had lots to say about the art on show and there was lots of chatter……along with DOGS! Because of course, Ranelagh Arts Centre is dog friendly art gallery, as many spots in Dublin are (do comment below if you know of any other art galleries or cultural spaces in Dublin / Ireland that are dog friendly.

So if you or your four legged friend are interested in seeing the Summer Art Exhibition, make sure to visit before it closes on the 26th of Aug.

Slow Lane Gallery presents “LARBI”

“LARBI” is now open in Gallery X and brings together a fantastically cohesive collection of contemporary art works by a diverse group of artists selected by Curator Dino Notaro of Slow Lane Gallery. The offical launch of these works of art took place on Thursday, 11th of August at 6pm in Gallery X on Hume Street, steps awy from Dublin’s Stephen’s Green.

Dino describes the concept of the “LARBI” art show as:

“Larbi Group Show is a coming home of sorts. A re-emergence after two years of lockdown.

The artists chosen for LARBI are those that ?I have collaborated with during the lockdown, and now the opportunity has come to showcase their works within the space of a gallery setting and celebrate contemporary art in Dublin.

Each artist has their own distinctive style and commands an audience. Breaking down barriers. Creating art that challenges you to think and jump into stories”

Featured artists include PIGSY, Zane Sutra, Veronica Buchanan, Sofia Swatek, Niamh O’Connor, Sheila Hamilton and Silvio Severino.

“LARBI” is open until 26th of August.

An interview with PIGSY

As part of the “LARBI” show I was interviewed by Dominick O’Cruadhliocht of Gallery X. See below for a short exerpt from the Q&A session

Q: When did you know you were an artist PIGSY?

A: I don’t think there was a realization. It was something I have always done. The time I knew that I wanted to be a full-time artist was about 2012 when my mental state changed and creatively being an artist was the only thing that would fulfil my creative appetite. I am an architect and will always be an architect. Architecture had become a business with many external voices and no real ownership of the creative process. I found art a very honest calming process that, I could just run with. Art quietens the chaos within my mind and has an endless flow of energetic creativity. I have never had an Epiphany. It has always been in me. I feel real in the process.

Q: Your work has a tribal and anarchic feel. Do you feel this is an expression of yourself as a person?

A: I never thought of my art as tribal but maybe it is a bit anarchic and neo-punk. I do call my artwork “punk poetry in paint”, which is a bit of a wink to John Keats and Cy Twombly. I just see my work as biographical and geographical. A lot of what I paint is about the location I am in and the things happening at that moment and what they emotionally mean to me. I connect to local stories, characters and everyday happenings.

Q: Tell me about your journey as an artist.

A: Well, it started with drawing with chalk on the ground of the school yard. I would steal chalk from the classroom to do my art in isolation. Sometimes, I would go on the mitch just to draw and be alone. I have Dyslexia and my main motivation from an early age was to prove everyone, that told me I couldn’t do something, wrong. This resonated in an expressive way, and it all started on the ground of those school

yards. When I learned, at an older age, creative techniques, and disciplines in college, I became more confident to let myself go and be freer.

Q: Of all your works is there a piece you love compared to a piece others love or is there a piece that is private? Your Portrait of Dorian Grey.

A: A piece that is private and that I love, is a painting of my mother in the kitchen, sitting in her chair.

Q: Is art to you a vocation or job?

A: A vocation. The urge to create art is an overwhelming feeling within me which I need to explore constantly. When this feeling manifests itself in me, I must allow it out. It’s not a choice.

Q: Without review, interview or critique what do you want to say as an artist?

A: A major purpose of my artistic endeavors is to use my successes as an artist to inspire others who have dyslexia, as I do, to pursue their own dreams despite the challenges they face. It is my calling.
