Opening at 5pm on Thursday 17th of November, Ranelagh Arts presents the work of Resident Artist Monika Crowley. This must see exhibition, showcases a body of work by Monika that explores a theme of the elevation of the mundane rituals of life through the lens of the kitchen sink (and the cycle of domesticity that revolves around it) which through her art work and explorations delves in and exposes the drama and life affirming nature of the day-to-day humdrum revealed through her interrogation of everyday objects,

A new art studio for PIGSY in Ranelagh
Studios of Ranelagh Arts - a new space for PIGSY to create
After my year’s art residency in Spain and then my return to Ireland, I am now really pleased to have been offered a studio space in Ranelagh Arts. While in Malaga, Spain I was artist in resident in La Casa Amarilla Centro de Arte y Cultura Contemporáne. It was an amazing experience which culminated in my solo exhibition “I Went to Mass”.
La Casa Amarilla had a gallery on the ground floor and then studios above where a selection of multidiscipinary artists worked in various spaces.
Artist Collaboration
Sharing spaces with other artists is a wonderfully collaborative thing to do and the creativie engagement adds to most artist’s work. In particular, I enjoyed the collaboration with the other artists in the studios of La Casa Amarilla because they were all so diverse and from different backgrounds and countries - again it all adds to creative endevours.
After my return to Ireland, I worked from studios in White Swan in Dublin 8. You can read about the White Swan space in a past blog about this amazing space and all that I got up to.
Ranelagh Art Studio
And now my newest art residency is in my hometown of Ranelagh. It is a shared space within the Ranelagh Arts Centre and again I am looking forward to engaging and collaborating with other artists and creatives. Nestled on the main street of Ranelagh, among shops, barbers and restaurants (only steps away from the Ranelagh institution that is Nick’s coffee!) there is a buzz around the area which I find immensely inspiring. Additionally it is only a few shops away from FrameXperts which is great for my framing needs - so my coffee addiction and framing is all covered literally at my front door!!
Pop in and see me if you are passing - or drop me a line by email to arrange a visit.
Supporting Fraser Holden and the Black and White Movement
Fraser Holden fundraises for the Motor Neuron Disease Association of Ireland
Back in 2017, I had a solo exhibition “Nostalgia’s Not What it Was” in Fumbally Exchange on Dame Lane in Dublin City. It was a sell out success and visited by so many people during the time it was open. One of the people who visited was Australian Fraser Holden who loved my work and was immensely positive about it. From talking to Fraser I could tell how creative he was himself and I knew he would do lots of interesting things while living in Ireland. From following him on Instagram I could see all that he got up to - even writing and illustrating a children’s book.
And now Fraser is working on his latest project which he has started since his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease. He has created the “Black and White Movement” to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and with his wife Orlagh Reynolds is hosting a large scale art exhibition on October 20th in the Richmond Event & Exhibition Centre in Dublin.
Black and White Movement Art Exhibition
I am proud to support Fraser in this endeavour and have donated two pieces for this exhibition in which all of the paintings are black and white. To find out more about the exhibtion, see the Black and White Art Movement Instagram.
The first painting is “Skies of Laughter” and the second PIGSY piece is titled “Searching II”
Fraser Holden on Ireland AM
In an interview on Ireland AM, Fraser’s wife Orlagh explains how ugly the disease of MND is but she goes on to say that there is goodness too and this goodness is where Fraser is now fundraising for the Motor Neurone Association of Ireland and how he reached out to artists and over 40 have submitted pieces for his Black and White Movement Art Exhibition. You can watch the interview with Fraser on Ireland AM here.
Tic Toc by Fraser Holden
As I said Fraser is a creative guy and he is also an artist too and so he has created a piece of art specifically for part of this fundraiser of which you can also buy tickets here for along with lots of other great prizes. Click here to see details of the raffle. The art work by Fraser is called “Commodity” and it is all about what is about our most important commodity which is time.
There are other ways to support and a GoFundMe has also been set up of which you can find details of by clicking here.
MND is an incurable terminal disease so any support you can give is invaluable and will help to fund research while the Go Fund Me could help Fraser and his family as they live with the disease. As I said I am very happy to be able to support Fraser in this project and I hope you can too.
Art Exhibition to raise funds for MND Ireland
And if you are interested in buying a piece of Black and White Art why not come along to the exhibition on the 20th of October in Richmond Event & Exhibtion Centre!
What: Black and White Movement Art Exhibtion
Where: Richmond Event & Exhibtion Centre, Dublin

Ice Bucket Challenge for MND
And if you are thinking you have never heard of Motor Neurone Disease you may recall the viral “Ice Bucket Challenge” from a few years ago. This challenge was all about bringing awareness to MND or what you may refer to as ALS as the disease is also known as amyotrphic lateral sclerosis, depending on what country you are living in. If you have any further information about MND or ALS, feel free to leave a comment in the box below!

Dyslexia Awareness Month: October
Celebrating Dyslexia all over the world
Attention is brought to dyslexia during the month of October with awareness weeks and days taking place at different times in Europe and other parts of the world.
Here in Ireland, we mark this week through European Dyslexia Week and World Dyslexia Month but I have listed below the other awareness dates that bring awareness and draw attention to dyslexia.
European Dyslexia Week: 3rd - 9th October 2022
International Dyslexia Day: 8th of October 2022
British Dyslexia Week (themed “Breaking through Barriers”): 3rd - 9th October 2022
World Dyslexia Month: October
I’m involved in a few different projects which all bring celebrate dyslexia or bring awareness to Dyslexia Day.
PIGSY and Dyslexia Awareness in Libraries
It’s a great honour for me to have the PIGSY documentary shared by many libraries in Ireland and elsewhere on their social media platforms in order to bring dyslexia awareness and support to the masses. The film is 8 mins long and it is a must watch by anyone who has dyslexia or is connected to someone with dyslexia. It was also interesting to see it being shared in New Zealand by SPELD New Zealand who are New Zealand’s leading not-for-profit provider of assessment, tuition & support for those living with dyslexia.
Neurodiversity Ireland: Infinity Ball 2022
Additionally, this year I am proud to announce that in connection with Neurodiversity Ireland a PIGSY art work has been offered as an auction item at the Infinity Ball 2022 in The Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin. This showcase event will raise funds for the creation of a Sensory Therapy Centre for neurodivergent children in Ireland along with bringing awareness to the 20% of the population who are “neurodivergent” and have Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism or ADHD.
See the image of “De Facto Leader” pictured here. It was an artwork that I created in Malaga, Spain while in residency in La Casa Amarilla Studios & Gallery. A bespoke frame (designed by me) was custom fabricated by Framexperts in Ranelagh. It’s a simple thin white slip frame and it adds a sharp juxtaposition to the loose fluidity of the artwork which is typical of my style.
PIGSY Short Film
The PIGSY documentary by Mike Andrews is available on the PIGSY website and youtube. To celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Week this October, I invite you to share it with anyone that is interested in Dyslexia and Neurodiversity. Click below to watch the video…..

Dialann 2023
Dialann 2023 - An Irish language diary featuring Irish sayings, quotes and images by Native Irish Speakers
Dialann go hiomlán as Gaeilge ar son cainteoirí agus foghlaimeoirí go léir.
A fully Irish language diary for speakers and learners
It was an honour, as an Irish speaker, to be invited to submit an image of my art work for Dialann 2023 created by Gaeltachtín (Little Gaeltacht)
My selected artwork is “Needed Awake Now” which is created from “meáin mheasctha” (mixed media).
Fionn MacCumhail / Finn MaCool
“Needed Awake Now” is a painting about Fionn MacCool
In Irish legend and according to the most popular account of Fionn MacCumhail’s death, he is not dead at all, rather, he sleeps in a cave, surrounded by the Fianna. One day he will awake and defend Ireland in the hour of her greatest need.
Within this painting is a message of calling those to arms in times of great need. Coming out of the pandemic I find this very relevant and reassured as we saw all of humankind band together in the time of need during the health crisis.
A perfect gift from Ireland
The diary is a really nice hardback edition and makes a perfect gift for all who are interested in the Irish language.

An interview with PIGSY
As part of the “LARBI” show I was interviewed by Dominick O’Cruadhliocht of Gallery X. See below for a short exerpt from the Q&A session
Q: When did you know you were an artist PIGSY?
A: I don’t think there was a realization. It was something I have always done. The time I knew that I wanted to be a full-time artist was about 2012 when my mental state changed and creatively being an artist was the only thing that would fulfil my creative appetite. I am an architect and will always be an architect. Architecture had become a business with many external voices and no real ownership of the creative process. I found art a very honest calming process that, I could just run with. Art quietens the chaos within my mind and has an endless flow of energetic creativity. I have never had an Epiphany. It has always been in me. I feel real in the process.
Q: Your work has a tribal and anarchic feel. Do you feel this is an expression of yourself as a person?
A: I never thought of my art as tribal but maybe it is a bit anarchic and neo-punk. I do call my artwork “punk poetry in paint”, which is a bit of a wink to John Keats and Cy Twombly. I just see my work as biographical and geographical. A lot of what I paint is about the location I am in and the things happening at that moment and what they emotionally mean to me. I connect to local stories, characters and everyday happenings.
Q: Tell me about your journey as an artist.
A: Well, it started with drawing with chalk on the ground of the school yard. I would steal chalk from the classroom to do my art in isolation. Sometimes, I would go on the mitch just to draw and be alone. I have Dyslexia and my main motivation from an early age was to prove everyone, that told me I couldn’t do something, wrong. This resonated in an expressive way, and it all started on the ground of those school
yards. When I learned, at an older age, creative techniques, and disciplines in college, I became more confident to let myself go and be freer.
Q: Of all your works is there a piece you love compared to a piece others love or is there a piece that is private? Your Portrait of Dorian Grey.
A: A piece that is private and that I love, is a painting of my mother in the kitchen, sitting in her chair.
Q: Is art to you a vocation or job?
A: A vocation. The urge to create art is an overwhelming feeling within me which I need to explore constantly. When this feeling manifests itself in me, I must allow it out. It’s not a choice.
Q: Without review, interview or critique what do you want to say as an artist?
A: A major purpose of my artistic endeavors is to use my successes as an artist to inspire others who have dyslexia, as I do, to pursue their own dreams despite the challenges they face. It is my calling.

"A Cohort of Creative Bohemians and other interesting individuals" by Tony Bryant
Tony Bryant’s Book "A Cohort of Creative Bohemians" is Out!
Tony Bryant, a renowned English journalist and cultural reporter, has just released his highly anticipated book, A Cohort of Creative Bohemians and Interesting Individuals. This captivating book dives deep into the colorful lives of some of the most intriguing people that Bryant has met over the years while living on the Costa del Sol in Spain. For over 25 years, Tony has been documenting the artistic and cultural pulse of the region through his work with SUR, Malaga’s most popular and longest-running English-language newspaper.
In his newly published book, Tony highlights the fascinating and diverse individuals he’s encountered throughout his career, from artists and musicians to writers and celebrities. The book is a testament to the rich and vibrant cultural scene that thrives in the heart of southern Spain.
Tony Bryant: A Storied Career in Journalism and Art
Having spent over two decades on the Costa del Sol, Tony Bryant has established himself as a go-to cultural correspondent. Through his work for SUR, he’s had the privilege of meeting some of the most talented and charismatic figures in the arts, literature, music, and film industries. These interviews have given him unique insights into the lives of his subjects, some of whom have become lifelong friends.
Tony's deep appreciation for creative individuals shines through in his book, where he shares not only his stories but also his admiration for the people who’ve left a mark on the cultural landscape of the Costa del Sol.
Discover the Creative Bohemians of the Costa del Sol
In A Cohort of Creative Bohemians, Tony offers a peek into the world of creative personalities who have helped shape the arts scene in Spain. The book is filled with vivid portrayals of artists, musicians, writers, and other fascinating individuals who have lived and worked in the region, making it a must-read for anyone interested in Spanish culture and the arts community.
Tony’s engaging narrative style brings to life the personalities and stories behind some of the Costa del Sol’s most colorful figures. His encounters with these individuals reveal the power of creativity, resilience, and the unique stories that connect us all.
A Personal Connection: Pigsy’s Story in the Book
I had the pleasure of meeting Tony Bryant several years ago when he interviewed me for an article on my art, my journey with dyslexia, and how I strive to inspire others. As an artist living and working in Spain, I’ve always been drawn to the creative community, and I was honored to share my story with Tony.
In A Cohort of Creative Bohemians, I am proud to be included as part of Tony’s “cohort.” In the book, Tony gives an in-depth account of our first meeting and the discussions we had about my childhood in Dublin, my art residency at La Casa Amarilla, and my work as an artist living with dyslexia. It’s a moment I’ll always cherish, and it’s exciting to see it immortalized in print.
An Excerpt from the Book: Pigsy and Tony’s First Meeting
Here’s a small excerpt from A Cohort of Creative Bohemians that I find quite amusing! Tony’s humorous take on our first meeting in my studio is a highlight of the book:
Tony Bryant’s Words:
"I first interviewed him in his studio, which was situated in the back streets of Malaga, close to the Carmen Thyssen Museum. His art is quite chaotic, and so I assumed his studio would be cluttered and disorderly. It was the opposite. However, the artist explained that his wife had insisted on tidying up before ‘the guy from the newspaper’ arrived. Having since visited his studio on several occasions, it became obvious that my initial assumption was correct."
The Cohort!
Tony's personal anecdotes and his witty observations add a unique charm to the book, making it an enjoyable read for fans of both art and journalism.
Other Notable Figures Featured in the Book
A Cohort of Creative Bohemians isn’t just about me—it’s also packed with stories of other remarkable individuals from diverse backgrounds. Some of the notable figures Tony interviewed include:
Richard Quest, CNN’s International Business Correspondent and host of the show Quest Means Business.
Nicole King, a renowned presenter for Marbella TV.
Magnet Man, the talented Barbadian singer.
Martin Hope and Jesse Lynn-Dean, the musicians from The Wasps, a well-known band with a growing international following.
Tony’s interviews with these individuals offer a fascinating glimpse into their personal and professional lives, showcasing their accomplishments and the paths they’ve taken to get where they are today.
Richard Quest Visits the Picasso Museum in Malaga
For those interested in learning more about Richard Quest, you can visit the CNN website to watch a video of him visiting the Pablo Picasso Museum in Malaga. Ranelagh Arts: Artists Profile
Meet the Artists of Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition
As I wrote in my previous blog, I was selected to be part of the RA Summer Exhibition. It’s been a great experience, with my artwork selling shortly after the exhibition opened, along with getting to meet lots of new artist friends through this recently re-opened cultural center in their new prime location on Ranelagh main street just across from the Luas station.
In addition to the Summer Exhibition, another thing that Ranelagh Arts are doing is they are profiling and featuring all of the artists on their social media. I was glad to be in the first batch of “profiled artists” and you can read the bio/profile below.
"PIGSY" is Ciarán McCoy. Ciarán McCoy is "PIGSY"
Artist PIGSY at work in his Art Studio in Dublin, Ireland
Ciarán McCoy, as an architect was the founding Partner of ODKM Architects in Dublin City. As an artist, he creates artworks as his alter ego PIGSY, which defines a clear separation between his being an architect and an artist. As PIGSY, he borrows from his architectural knowledge and other life experiences to create his diverse punk expressionist art works.
Spontaneous approach to art
PIGSY's works include paintings and sculptures that are created using a wide range of mediums such as everyday household acrylic paint, chalk, oil sticks, acrylic sticks, oil paint, spray paint, charcoal, pencil, crayon and any other medium that feels right at the time of creating the works, including studio detritus. Many of his artworks are self-portraits or semi-biographical in theme, and express the frustrations of someone who lives with dyslexia. His obsession with words both frustrate and fascinate him, while at the same time are a constant theme from inception to completion of many of his artworks. His process tends to be a very quick start in a high paced manner which evolves and then terminates in a deeply considered emotion. The paintings and sculptures are a personal opening of the inner workings of a chaotic dyslexic mind that is in a battle to calm and organise itself. The quick and loose stye is the polar opposite to the rigid disciplined learnt practice of architecture. This spontaneous approach takes away all inhibitions and allows a non-inhibited honesty that rings true in his work.
Art Residency & Exhibitions
Artist PIGSY pictured with his wife Enid Bebbington at the opening night of his exhibtion “Catharsis of Collapse” in Kenmare Butter Market Gallery, Kenmare, Kerry, Ireland
McCoy is a qualified draughtsman, Architectural Technician, Architect and is listed on the RIAI Register of Architects. PIGSY is a member of several international art organisations aswell as Visual Artists Ireland. He completed a year’s residency in La Casa Amarilla Gallery in Malaga Spain in 2021, and has works on display in galleries in Spain, Ireland & USA. He recently exhibited in the Kenmare Butter Market where he showed large scale works that he created in Spain. Currently PIGSY works from his Dublin City Centre studio.
Artist with dyslexia
PIGSY is a champion for people with dyslexia and publicly speaks about the subject along with being featured in filmmaker Mike Andrew's 2018 short film "PIGSY" which tells about his life as an artist with dyslexia.

Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition is now open!
Official Launch of Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition.
It was an honour to be selected to be part of the Ranelagh Arts Summer Exhibition with my artwork “Searching” chosen by the selection committee to be part of the show.
Curated by Monika Crowley the Summer exhibition consisted of a variety of works created by forty artists, many from the locality and also some from further afield with artists from USA, Canada and Georgia. The mix of artists all brought together under one roof in Ranelagh gave a multicultural feel to the exhibition but also united us as one group within the vibrant community that is Ranelagh.
Curation
Kudos to the selection committee and the curatorial team who created a cohesive collection of art that worked incredibly well in the newly located Ranelagh Arts Centre now on main street Ranelagh near to Ranelagh Gardens.
Ranelagh Artist
As a Ranelagh resident, that can trace my roots back 3 generations to this place, (I live in the house that my grandfather bought and my father was raised in), it has given me great pride to be part of this exhibition. Ranelagh is home to many artists and it is like a creative and cultural hub in Dublin 6 and I love being part of this art scene.
Summer Vibe in Ranelagh
With the official opening speech given by Ranelagh Arts Chair Emer O'Siochru, there was a great vibe and the large crowd of attendees spilled out on to the main street of Ranelagh after enjoying the art in the show room. With the good weather in Dublin, this art opening brought me back to my recent art residence in Spain with memories of art exhibitions and openings that I was associated with in La Casa Amarilla, Malaga where attendees would spill out on to the street of Calle Santos, glass of wine in hand.
Exhibition Sponsorship
Speaking of wine, a big thanks to event sponsor Redmonds Off Licence who sponsored the wine along with Humphreys providing additional sponsorship of the event, along with support from Dublin City Council.
The exhibtion runs until August 26th so call in and see this group show before it closes!
See further details here on the Ranelagh Arts Instagram.

More Summer Exhibitions
If you missed seeing the PIGSY work at this exhibition, the next group show opening is a Slow Lane Gallery presentation “Larbi” in Gallery X on Hume Street, With guest curator Dino Notaro, I will be showcasing some weird and wonderful artworks. The PIGSY pieces that have been selected are very raw and quite different from most of the pieces I exhibit. They will push the viewer out of their comfort zone as they experience the unexpected PIGSY art that for this show makes serious moves away from the mainstream art I normally present.
